What language level do I need as a student at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich (HMTM)?
Foreign applicants from non-German-speaking countries and Germans whose native language is not German must produce, alongside the requisite qualification for the chosen programme, evidence that they have the necessary knowledge of the German language to be accepted on the programme. For acceptance on a postgraduate performance programme (Master performance programmes; Postgraduate Certificate Studies (Masterclasses)), evidence of German language skills is not required, but is desirable (exception: Master programme Music Theatre/ Opera Singing: level B2 - see below).
For all Bachelor performance programmes and all Bachelor jazz and folk music programmes, evidence of the requisite German language skills may be provided by a certificate showing that at least level B1 of the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: learning, teaching, assessment" has been attained.
For the Bachelor and Master programmes in Music Theory/ Aural Training, evidence of the requisite German language skills may be provided by a certificate showing that at least level B2 of the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: learning, teaching, assessment" has been attained.
For performance/teaching programmes (undergraduate and postgraduate), teaching programmes and for the Master’s course in “Music Theatre/Opera Singing” evidence of the requisite German language skills may be provided by a certificate showing that at least level B2 of the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: learning, teaching, assessment" has been attained.
For the Master programmes “Cultural and Music Management” and “Music Journalism in Public and Commercial Broadcasting” evidence of the requisite German language skills may be provided by a certificate showing that at least level C1 of the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: learning, teaching, assessment" has been attained.
With TestDaF certificates the relevant level is required in all four skills. If the requisite level has not been achieved in one or more of the skills, the test will not be accepted. Exception: A TestDaF passed with at least the result TDN 4 in all modules of the test is regarded as evidence of linguistic aptitude for unconditional admission or enrolment in all study programmes and degrees.
Only language certificates from recognised educational institutions will be accepted.
Language certificates must be presented on the day of enrolment in an officially authenticated copy1). Exceptionally, students on the Bachelor Programme Dance can submit the requisite language certificate by the beginning of tuition in the third University semester at the latest.
Foreign language certificates will only be accepted in a German translation (exception: certificates in English); the translation must be made by a publicly certified and sworn interpreter/ translator in the relevant language and be authenticated.
Foreign applicants from non-German-speaking countries and Germans whose native language is not German will not be enrolled without one of the language certificates listed above or without having passed the entrance examination or process.
1) Official authentications can be issued by authorities and notaries who are entitled to issue an official stamp (i.e. the authority issuing the document, city or municipal administration, residents’ registration office, etc.) Copies of previously officially certified copies are not valid as proof.
